Description

The Equator Principles (EPs) were established by the financial industry to determine, assess, and manage environmental and social risk in projects. This book tackles a critical and timely issue: the effectiveness of the Equator Principles in addressing climate change through Environmental Impact Assessment mechanisms. As climate change increasingly disrupts global economies and projects, financial institutions face growing risks to their credit, reputation, and legitimacy. At the same time, infrastructure project financing remains a key contributor to rising greenhouse gas emissions.

The Equator Principles Financial Institutions introduced the EPs to address these challenges by integrating climate change considerations into the risk assessment process for financed projects. However, the policy remains vague, leaving room for debate about its actual impact and effectiveness. This study seeks to bridge this critical knowledge gap by analyzing the EPs from a climate change perspective. It will identify the challenges of implementing the EPs’ climate change mandates, develop clear criteria for integrating climate issues into Environmental Impact Assessment mechanisms, and evaluate whether the EPs help financial institutions meet sustainability goals. The research will also explore how the EPs align with shareholder, stakeholder, and institutional theories while advancing sustainable development and managing the financial risks of climate change.

By shedding light on the practical implications of the EPs and offering actionable insights, the book aims to contribute meaningfully to the discourse on sustainable finance and climate risk management. It is an essential resource for scholars, policymakers, and industry leaders looking to understand and improve the role of financial institutions in addressing the climate crisis.
